Level 1 or 2 NVQ in Horse Care
£890 - However possible funding routes available.
Level 1:
You're just starting out working with horses, perhaps as a stablehand. You want to demonstrate the basic skills you need to work in a stable yard and move on to further study.
You complete 5 core units:
- Assisting with the care of horses
- Assisting with cleaning the stables and yard
- Assisting with putting on, taking off and cleaning equipment
- Assisting with handling horses
- Maintaining health, safety and good working relations.
If you want to demonstrate your riding skills you can also choose to do 1 non-mandatory unit:
- Riding horses in an enclosed area.
Level 2:
You have some experience of working with horses and want to show your competence at more complicated tasks. You want a recognised qualification to help you take on greater individual responsibility.
You complete 8 core units:
- Ensuring your own actions reduce risks to health and safety
- Preparing and cleaning stables
- Maintaining the health and well-being of horses
- Preparing horses for use
- Preparing and maintain horses on grazing land
- Preparing and providing non-ridden exercise and aftercare
- Loading and unloading horses under supervision
- Maintaining effective working relationships.
You also choose 1 optional unit from:
- Contributing to the care of the rehabilitation of horses
- Assisting with reproduction, parturition care and young stock
- Exercising horses under supervision
- Riding schooled horses under supervision
- Driving horses under supervision
- Assisting with leading a trek
- Assisting with the specialist care of performance horses
- Assisting riders with special needs
